How to write an SEO optimized article on WordPress?

Writing a quality article on WordPress and successfully optimizing its content for the SEO are essential steps to improve the visibility of your blog / website. You don’t know where to start ? Follow our advice to manage to write a WordPress article that is both useful for Internet users and optimized for search engines.

How to write an article on WordPress ?

WordPress is today the simplest tool to use to create a website or blog – the platform currently hosts more than one in four websites worldwide. Free, this content management system (CMS) allows everyone to write (relatively) easily on the Internet without the need for programming knowledge. But it is still necessary to apply some elementary rules !

Add a new article

A WordPress article is created in the back office of your blog / WordPress website to which you have connected with your username and password. When you are connected :

  • Spot the “Articles” and “All items” tabs located in the menu on the left of the screen
  • Click on the “Add an article” tab located under the “All items” tab

Here you are on the creation page of your new article.

How to write an article optimized for SEO ?

You want your article to attract prospects and generate traffic ? Several techniques will help you write an SEO optimized WordPress article

1 – Find relevant keywords

The keywords used in your article have a direct impact on its referencing. To be relevant and promote the proper positioning of the content, they must correspond to requests regularly made by Internet users on the subject developed in the text.

Each WordPress article must also have a single main keyword and several secondary key expressions to have the possibility of being referenced. Secondary key expressions are less competitive variants of the keyword; they are what is commonly called the long sled.

  • Example: An article on luxury watches will have as main keyword “luxury watch” and for secondary key expressions “purchase of luxury watches”, “sale of luxury watches”, “manufacture of luxurious watches” etc. .. (depending on the activity of the website offering the article).

Several tools can help you define your keywords and verify their relevance. You can use :

  • the Google search bar by looking at the different results obtained when you type the keyword;
  • the Google Adwords tool ;
  • the WordPress SeoPress extension.

This extension (plug-in) is ideal for analyzing the relevance of your pages and keywords, but also benefit from several other optimization options.

2- Give your article a title

The title should summarize the subject of your article and use your keyword. Do not panic if you cannot find a final title before you have started writing your article ; put a provisional title (which summarizes the main idea developed in the content) : you will probably find it easier to find the final title after writing the article.

3 – Make a writing plan

The structure of your article must of course depend on its length – for example, it is not necessarily necessary to write an introduction for a 300-word article. In any case, making a plan (by breaking down each part and adding title levels) can help you synthesize your ideas and save you from going in all directions at the time of writing.

4 – Give relevant information to readers

Search engines like Google favor above all items with high added value. When we talk about value added texts, we are referring to content that contains information relevant to the reader on the subject sought.

It is therefore important to always keep in mind that the subject of the article (the substance) must always prevail over the form. We can never repeat it enough: Google and other search engines like “intelligent” and intelligible content. Their priority is to classify the most relevant content on a given subject. A botched content, but well structured from an SEO point of view, will therefore not necessarily be well positioned by the search engines.

You must therefore favor a “natural” writing and provide useful information to the reader. The integration of the keywords should be done in the least forced way possible. Otherwise, your article will not be correctly positioned by search engines – certain practices can even be sanctioned to the point of making you tumble down in their classification.

To provide quality web content, also think about:

  • favor short sentences;
  • gather the information: the most important information must be processed at the beginning and at the end of the article;
  • do not hesitate to make flea lists;
  • aerate the content: a paragraph = an idea.

As in classic word processing software, WordPress offers several functionalities to set up your content and make it more pleasant to read: bold, italic, alignment, centering …

How to better optimize your WordPress article ?

You wrote your article ? Several other “techniques” will now allow you to improve its positioning.

Place keywords judiciously in content

Your main keyword must appear in the first paragraph. It must then be integrated naturally 1 or 2 times (depending on the length of the article) into the body of the text, then at the end of the article. Secondary key expressions should also appear at the beginning and at the end of the content, and be developed in the body of the text.

It is also advisable to bold (using the “Bold” function) at least twice the main keyword (generally at the beginning and at the end) and some expressions of the long sled.

Structure the content with appropriate title tags

HTML tags are analyzed by search engines to determine the relevance of your content (relevance which, as we have seen, has a direct impact on SEO optimization). It is therefore important to follow a hierarchy of titles to improve the referencing of your article :

  • H1

This tag corresponds to the title of the article. She must use the main keyword. A page (or article) must contain a single h1 tag.

  • H2

These title levels allow you to develop the keyword and include variants. It is possible to create several h2 tags.

  • H3

This tag can be considered as a heading located under h2 (or a level 2 subtitle). Several h3 can be created by content.

H4, h5 or h6 are of little use for SEO referencing an article.

Note that most WordPress themes automatically define the title of your article as an h1. So start writing the text directly with a h2, using the WordPress drop-down menu (title 2) or the h2 tag in this way:

Whatever the title tag, do not exceed 65 characters so that the title can be analyzed in its entirety by the search engines.

Redefine the permalians

WordPress creates default permalians that integrate the day and name of the article into the URL. It is recommended to establish new ones, because search engines favor permalians who contain the main keyword of the article. The easiest way is to use the title of the publication as a permalian. To do this :

  • Go to the “Fixes” menu of the WordPress dashboard;
  • Select “Publishing title”;
  • Click on “Save changes”.

Be careful, however ! If you change the structure of the permalians after publication, you risk breaking all previous links.

Integrate media into the article

Adding multimedia images or content to your article is strongly advised to improve its positioning. To integrate an image, you can use the “add a media” tab, located above the text in your WordPress creation page, or use the tag .

Also remember to add alternative text for each image or integrated media, in order to enhance SEO optimization: you will find this function in “Image settings”.

Make internal and external links

Internal links will direct your article to other items in your blog / website. They are both essential to facilitate the navigation of the Internet user on your site and for the SEO. To integrate an internal link:

  • select the passage on which you want to integrate a link by highlighting it;
  • click on the “insert / modify a link” tab located above the text in the WordPress creation page;
  • insert the url of the page you want to redirect the link to.

External links refer to competing sites, or to partner sites, other than yours. Above all, privilege external links to sites with strong authority in your field. This improves the experience of your reader and increases the relevance of your content.

Write the meta-description

Writing a meta-description is essential to ensure a good click rate (CTR). This short sentence that appears in the SERP (the search engine results page) will indeed encourage the Internet user to click on your article. And the more important your CTR, the more the search engines feel that your content is relevant.
